If your main complaint is soap scum, a dulling layer on shower glass, or mineral buildup in appliances, the salt-based route is the one that actually changes the water. If you only want a little scale control and you are more worried about maintenance than perfect softness, a conditioner can still make sense. Just do not pay full-softener money for a device that is really a scale-management tool.

The ongoing bill is usually reasonable. Salt is the main recurring cost for a traditional system, and many homes go through one or two 40-pound bags a month. At typical store prices, that is not nothing, but it is still cheaper than replacing a crusted shower door, a water heater with scale problems, or a dishwasher that starts acting tired after a few years. If you are comparing quotes, ask what is included: resin tank, valve, install, startup, and a hardness setting that matches your water.

How to size a system without paying for extra capacity

For water softeners, sizing starts with two numbers: how hard your water is and how much water your house uses before the next regeneration cycle. The plumber shorthand is grain capacity, and the marketing shorthand is usually bigger is better. That is not always true. A two-bath condo with one or two people does not need the same tank as a four-bath house with teenagers, a big soaking tub, and a sprinkler-heavy yard.
